Piesse Joyner Home

This is my home. It was designed for living, entertaining and also as a retreat from the world. We wanted to embrace a sustainable way to build by disturbing as little land as possible, taking advantage of existing infrastructure as well as trying to build a quality home using materials that were sensitive to the environment and would age well over time.
We built on a little over a quarter acre lot within walking distance of all that Carrboro has to offer. To take advantage of both passive and active solar the house is long and narrow, running exactly East-West on the lot. It is under 1800 square feet but feels larger due to it's open plan and easy connection to outdoor spaces in all directions. Rooms are defined by ceiling and floor variations, details and color.
The large southern exposure floods almost every room with natural daylight while 2' overhangs and the balcony, protect us from the hot summer sun. Three stories makes the house like a chimney; naturally ventilating the house and also providing a fabulous view over the other homes in the neighborhood. The brick red dyed concrete floor on the first floor is a thermal mass for the house, so it helps keep us cool in the summer while the radiant heat warms our feet in the winter. The walls are insulated with dense pak blown cellulose insulation and the windows are wood, double paned, argon filled with Low-e glass. All paint is low VOC.
The house is fun to live in and welcoming to come home to. The plan is simple and open, filled with daylight and the spaces flow easily from inside to out for entertaining and also when we want to escape from the world or just relax at the end of day.
