This deck house had hardly been touched since it was built when the new owners bought it. It was cramped and awkward but it had a spectacular view that was blocked by a narrow deck and weathered railing.
To maximize the view, bring in natural daylight and make the living spaces flow together, the southern window wall was pushed out under the existing roof.
Adding only eight feet made a huge difference to the space. The kitchen was pulled out of the corner to take advantage of the light and views and the entry was opened up to allow graceful views through the house. The deck is now off to the side so that the view can be enjoyed from both indoors and out.
The integrity of the house remains and the original aesthetic, including the exposed structure and the suspended hearth, is still there but the details are refined to compliment the new owner's lifestyle, taste and fabulous African artwork.
